Speaking of Lost Hard Drives, Has Anyone Seen My USB Key?
That moment of panic as you realize you’ve lost your USB key. What was on it? Where was I last? IronKey now has a USB thumb drive with hardware encryption, an on-board random number generator, and generates its own cryptographic keys. All data stored on the drive is encrypted using AES CBC-mode encryption.
This is far and away more advanced that, say, SanDisk’s Cruzer Pro, which uses a small encrypted “partition” on their device. These types of devices are highly susceptible to brute force password attacks, especially if memory rewinding is used to defeat a password guess counter. The password guess counter of the IronKey device is internal to the cryptographic processor and is not stored in the flash memory. If the password guess limit is reached, the device destroys it’s keys, making the files permanently inaccessible.
Like anything else, this isn’t hacker-proof. If someone is properly trained, motivated, and they have enough time, they have a chance to getting your data.
